Steamer Nashville

Third remaining western river steamboat in operation

An authentic western river steamboat—that truly replicates Nashville’s rich steamboat and river history.

Originally built in 1971, the Steamer Nashville is a true piece of Americana. This authentic, steam-powered sternwheeler—Coast Guard certified to carry 400 passengers—has been lovingly restored to preserve the rich heritage of river travel. More than just a vessel, she’s a living symbol of days gone by when Steamboats were America’s most luxurious form of travel and entertainment.

The Legacy of the Julia Belle Swain

Before being renamed the Nashville, this storied riverboat sailed as the Julia Belle Swain, built and operated by Captain Dennis Trone for service on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.

During her decades on the water, the Julia Belle Swain earned national acclaim, including winning the Great Steamboat Race against the Delta Queen and Belle of Louisville in 1976. She even found fame on the silver screen, appearing in classic films such as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

A Stage for Music & Memories

Onboard, guests will discover the John Hartford Stage, named in honor of Grammy award–winning banjo and fiddle player John Hartford.

A celebrated folk musician, Hartford once served as Pilot aboard the Julia Belle Swain and wrote many songs about his time as pilot and entertainer aboard the famed steamboat. He later won a Grammy for his iconic song Gentle on My Mind, made famous by Glen Campbell.

Powered by History

The Nashville’s vintage steam engines date back to 1915, originally built for the ferry Baton Rouge.

With her authentic steam calliope, steam whistle,  classic red paddlewheel, and multi-deck design, this Nashville riverboat carries the spirit of the great western riverboats into the 21st century.

A New Chapter in Music City

Now beginning her next chapter on the Cumberland River, the Steamer Nashville brings timeless charm, historic character, and unforgettable experiences to downtown Nashville. She is one of only three remaining Coast Guard–approved western river steamboats in the United States, making her a rare and remarkable part of America’s history.

Please note: The Steamer Nashville is currently under renovation and will join her sister the Capitol in late 2026.
